A History of the Zipper's Bowling Association

The Association began life as the idea of a bowler who had undergone invasive open-heart surgery and wanted to show his appreciation - in some way - of having been given his life back. In the summer of 1995 he requested other bowlers of a like mind to contact him, and in December of that year sixteen interested bowlers attended the inaugural meeting at the Leighton Buzzard Bowls Club. All were looking for the same thing - a more tangible way in which they could say "Thank You" for being given a second chance.

The Association accepts invitations to play bowls wherever & whenever possible and averages about 20 matches a year - both indoors and out - across the country. Clubs and Bowling Associations agree to host a charity game against the Zipper's, with money being raised in a variety of ways.

Current membership is over 250 and is restricted to bowlers, both ladies and men, who have undergone invasive heart surgery (including key-hole surgery) and who are members of recognised bowling clubs. The term 'Zipper' relates to the scar (akin to a 'zip fastener') left after surgery. However, to-days surgery methods do not always necessitate the splitting of the sternum and therefore the 'zip' only applies now in approx. 30% of operations. We have members that have had heart transplants; multiple bypasses; new valves; stents and even pace-makers inserted.

As a result of our operations we now have vastly improved life styles, and in gratitude wish to raise funds to contribute to local cardiac hospitals, coronary care units and rehabilitation centres when they are appealing for funds to finance a special project, or to help with the purchase of specialised items of equipment. Although we are not a recognised charity all donations and money raised, together with any surplus from our annual subscriptions, is donated to various hospitals as nominated by and voted for at our AGM by the members.

The Association has now raised over £100,000 since 1996. We hope that by reading this you will have become aware of our existence and our aims. So, if you have the necessary 'qualifications' why not become a member? On the face of it, our Association may be the last 'club' you would ever want to join by choice, but if you do become a member you will be joining the ranks of the 'forever grateful'!
