Outdoor Bowling
The Club plays bowls outdoors on its Green in Lushington Drive between the end of April and the end of September. Members may use the Green at any time, provided the rink has not been booked in the 'Rink book' (diary) kept on the bar and provided the green convenor has not closed all or part of the green. If you wish to book a rink for any purpose this should be done by means of this book. Events listed in the Club's fixture list and league matches have absolute priority.
For novice members, coaching can be arranged by application to a Committee Member. The club currently has several members who are trained to the English Bowls Coaching Scheme (EBCS) standard. There are practice sessions on Monday afternoons, though the best time to meet fellow members and to play bowls is in the Thursday Night Drives and Socials.
Apart from the £1.50 match fee for all inter Club matches, there are no charges to playing members for playing outdoor bowls at the Club, other than those charges necessary to cover the costs of catering.
Unless otherwise stated, the dress on the outdoor green is for white above the waist and grey below (apart from shoes). This applies during roll-ups as well as matches. This rule is waived for novice members in the first few weeks of visiting the club. If white below the waist is required, it is specified on the team list and in the fixture card.
Competitions
Various club competitions are run each year. The draw for each competition is made in early May, with a finals day in late August.
Members may also enter for the Surrey competitions, run under the auspices of SCBA.
- Saturday and Sunday Afternoons - Mixed Matches
- Wednesday Afternoons - Ladies Matches
- Some midweek evenings in high season - Matches (mostly mixed)
Details of these, including dress, venue and time, can be read in the Club's fixture list which doubles as your membership card.
Team lists for each match are posted in the Clubhouse and members wishing to be considered for playing should put their names on the appropriate list, preferably at least a week before the date to allow the team captains to select the teams. All matches are one off friendlies and all members applying will be considered. Each member playing in outdoor home friendlies is expected to bring 2 rounds of sandwiches and 2 portions of cake (1 for themselves and 1 for their opponent).
Once novices have learnt the basic principles of bowling, they are encouraged to put their name down to play for matches. The Club will always prefer to play a novice rather than reduce the number of teams playing.
Leagues - Weekly Matches
Team lists for each match are posted as for matches. For Leagues, as long as the Club is in contention, the organiser will pick the strongest team available.
The ladies also enter the top club award, a knockout competition consisting of a singles, a pairs, a triples and a rinks match all played at the same time. The overall score determines the winner of the round (see results page).
